About Corwin
Corwin's approach is grounded in creating a safe, collaborative therapeutic space where clients feel heard, understood, and supported through life's complexities. He works with clients from adolescence (13+) through to older adulthood.
Corwin views psychological support through a biopsychosocial framework, recognising that mental health is shaped by biological factors, cognitive habits, life history, and social context. The foundation of effective therapy is a strong, trusting working relationship tailored to each client's unique values, strengths, and goals.
Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all model, he draws from a range of evidence-based treatment modalities:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Identifying and reframing unhelpful thought patterns, addressing cognitive biases, and developing practical behavioural coping strategies.
- Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) & Mindfulness: Cultivating psychological flexibility, developing acceptance of difficult emotions, and taking meaningful action aligned with personal values.
- Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) & Emotion Regulation Skills: Building distress tolerance, perspective-taking, and emotional reappraisal skills to navigate overwhelming feelings.
- Schema Therapy & Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills: Exploring enduring emotional patterns, addressing core unmet needs, and strengthening interpersonal effectiveness.
- Existential Therapy: Creating space to explore fundamental questions of meaning, purpose, identity, uncertainty, and death anxiety.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing - Level 1): Safely processing distressing memories, trauma, and adverse life experiences.
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): Strengthening relationship dynamics, improving communication, and adapting to major life transitions.
Areas of focus
He works with people on:
- Anxiety and worry: Generalised anxiety, social anxiety, health and death anxiety, specific phobias, and obsessive-compulsive concerns.
- Perfectionism, burnout, and rumination: Relentless self-criticism, demanding standards, chronic stress, and repetitive overthinking.
- Emotion regulation: Intense emotional reactivity, impulsivity, distress intolerance, and building reliable self-soothing skills.
- Low mood and depression: Low mood, loss of vitality or meaning, and self-esteem difficulties.
- Trauma and adverse life experiences: Processing unresolved past trauma, and establishing emotional safety and stability.
- Substance use: Recovery, harm reduction, and situations where substance use sits alongside other mental health difficulties.
- Existential concerns and life transitions: Questions of purpose, identity, mortality, and major life changes.
Corwin's bachelor's dissertation explored the effect of cognitive biases on stigma towards mental health conditions. His master's dissertation investigated death anxiety and emotion regulation strategies, which he continues to explore in his doctoral studies at Curtin University. He is also developing and evaluating support groups for ADHD.
Before obtaining registration as a psychologist, Corwin worked as a support worker in a drug and alcohol detoxification residential service, supporting people with substance dependence and abuse.
He consults from Succoris Joondalup on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. He accepts private self-referrals, GP mental health treatment plans, and NDIS referrals that are self-managed or plan-managed.
