Clinical psychology

Clinical psychologists at Succoris.

Clinical psychologists hold AHPRA endorsement in the clinical psychology area of practice — specialised training to assess, diagnose, and treat complex mental health presentations. Available across our eight clinics and telehealth Australia-wide.

What is a clinical psychologist?
A clinical psychologist is a psychologist who has completed specialised postgraduate training (a Master's or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology) and additional supervised clinical registrar training. They hold AHPRA endorsement in the clinical psychology area of practice. Their expertise is in the assessment, diagnosis, and psychological treatment of complex and severe mental health conditions.
What's the difference between a clinical psychologist and a registered psychologist?
Both are AHPRA-registered and qualified to provide psychological services. A registered psychologist has completed at least 5 years of training (4-year degree + 1-year supervised internship). A clinical psychologist has completed at least 8 years of training (6-year postgraduate program + 2-year supervised registrar program) with specific focus on complex mental health. Medicare rebates are higher for clinical psychologists.
What's the difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health — they can prescribe medication and may provide psychotherapy. A clinical psychologist is not a medical doctor and cannot prescribe medication, but specialises in evidence-based psychological therapies and assessments. The two professions often work collaboratively: a psychiatrist may manage medication while a clinical psychologist provides ongoing therapy.
When should I see a clinical psychologist rather than a registered psychologist?
Both can support a wide range of concerns. A clinical psychologist may be particularly appropriate for complex or severe presentations — for example, significant trauma, personality disorder, complex comorbidity, or severe depression. If you're not sure, book with any of our clinicians — they'll refer on internally if someone else is a better fit.

Medicare rebates for clinical psychology

With a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, sessions with a clinical psychologist attract a higher Medicare rebate than sessions with a registered psychologist — reflecting the additional training and scope. Current clinical psychology rebate: $145.25 per session (MBS, 2026). Up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year.
